A secondary copy of active data created so that the original can be recovered after loss, corruption, or damage.
Backups are created on a schedule or whenever source data changes. They may contain files, databases, application settings, operating-system data, virtual machines, or complete server environments.
A backup is intended for recovery, not permanent retention. Older backup versions may be replaced over time, while the original production data remains in active use.
