Because we like to order large batches of name tags, we have to continue hiring Brians. Our latest intern continues the Brian trend! He’s joining us for a few weeks and working on some back-end and mobile projects; awesome! Let’s get to know Brian number five a bit better, shall we?
What is your Backblaze title?
Junior Engineering Intern.
Where are you originally from?
I was born and raised in Mountain View, CA.
What attracted you to Backblaze?
Previously I had worked for a big company, with that in mind I decided to try out something closer to a startup. Another thing is that when I looked into Backblaze, the environment and culture seemed educational and fun. Who wouldn’t wanna have fun and learn at the same time?
What do you expect to learn while being at Backblaze?
Swift, the programming language geared towards Apple development (possibly a little Objective C) and some web stuff based in Java. Also, learning how to learn which, to me, is a pretty big part of development as far as adapting and introducing new or foreign tools in an environment.
Where else have you worked?
It’s been a long journey. I have done many things in my past, most that I am proud of. This includes the following: working on a ranch, YMCA basketball coach, Panera server and dishwasher, Camp Counselor, and UI/UX Intern at Hewlett Packard.
Where did you go to school?
I graduated from Mountain View High School. I now attend Cal Poly Pomona (no, it is not the same thing as SLO, it’s better at everything except beaches).
What’s your dream job?
A job where I enjoy the people I work with and work under, an idea or product I can back and some sort of involvement with computers. Maybe with a little video games involved for fun.
Favorite place you’ve traveled?
New Hampshire for the lakes; Jackson, Wyoming for the Buffalo; and Hawaii because it’s still a dream.
One of my favorite things is playing guitar. I love strumming and fingerpicking random notes and finding something that sounds cool.
Of what achievement are you most proud?
Finding my wife. Not only does she put up with me being nerdy and stubborn, she sometimes joins in. And to top it all off, she is beautiful.
Star Trek or Star Wars?
Not a fair question… One is a great TV series and the other is a great movie collection. Although if Scotty could beam me up with a lightsaber I would be more than happy.
Coke or Pepsi?
Root beer, but Coke for the sake of caffeinated drinks. If you ever need a system to pick soda there are three categories:
- Coke based soda (dark brown): Coke, Pepsi, Rootbeer, Dr. Pepper…
- Sprite based soda (light or clear): Sprite, 7up, Mountain Dew, Cream Soda, Squirt
- Fruity soda: Fanta, Sunkist, Crush, Jones, Izze
Chicken and rice (of Asian descent). My old roommate’s mom made peanut chicken, best I’ve ever had.
Why do you like certain things?
Because my name is Brian, and all Brians like good things.
Anything else you’d like you’d like to tell us?
My goal this summer is to make everyone in the office smile or laugh at least once.
Good luck making people laugh Brian. As I am the Chief Smiles Officer here at Backblaze, there are a couple of tricks I can show you. That said, welcome to the team!
