A byte is made up of 8 bits. A bit\u2014short for \u201cbinary digit\u201d\u2014is a single unit of data. Namely a 1, or a 0.<\/p>\n<p>The International System of Units (SI) denotes \u201cexa\u201d as a multiplication by the sixth power of 1000 or (10<sup>18<\/sup>).<\/p>\n<p>In other words, 1 exabyte (EB) = 10<sup>18<\/sup>bytes = 1,000<sup>6<\/sup>bytes = 1000000000000000000 bytes = 1,000 petabytes = 1 million terabytes = 1 billion gigabytes. It was a big deal for us, it took us two years to accomplish and, more importantly, it was a sign that thousands of customers trusted us with their data.<\/p>\n<p>It meant a lot! But when we decided to tell the world about it, we had a hard time quantifying just how big 10 petabytes were, so naturally we made an infographic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-90605\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/blog-drive-height.jpg\" alt=\"10 Petabytes Visualized\" width=\"560\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/blog-drive-height.jpg 560w, https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/blog-drive-height-275x300.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/10-petabytes-visualized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">That\u2019s a lot of hard drives.<\/a> A Burj Khalifa of drives, in fact.<\/p>\n<p>In what felt like the blink of an eye, it was two years later, and we had <a href=\"\/blog\/backblaze-stores-75-petabytes-of-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">75 petabytes of data<\/a>. The Burj was out. And, because it was 2013, we quantified that amount of data like this\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-94567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image3-2-300x246.png\" alt=\"At 3MB per song, Backblaze would store 25 billion songs.\" width=\"300\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image3-2-300x246.png 300w, https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image3-2-768x631.png 768w, https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image3-2-560x460.png 560w, https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image3-2.png 964w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pop songs now average around 3:30 in length, which means if you tried to listen to this imaginary musical archive, it would take you 167,000 years. And sadly, the total number of recorded songs is only the tens to hundreds of millions, so you\u2019d have some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">repeats<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>That\u2019s<\/em> a lot of songs! But more importantly, our data under management had grown by 750%! But we could barely take time to enjoy it because five months later we hit <a href=\"\/blog\/100-petabytes-of-cloud-data\/\">100 petabytes<\/a>, and we had to call it out. Stacking up to the Burj Khalifa was in the past! Now, we rivaled Mt. Shasta\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-94568\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image2-2-300x251.png\" alt=\"Stacked on end they would be 9,941 feet, about the same height as Mt. Shasta from the base.\" width=\"300\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image2-2-300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image2-2-1024x856.png 1024w, https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image2-2-768x642.png 768w, https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image2-2-560x468.png 560w, https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image2-2.png 1168w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But stacking drives was rapidly becoming less effective as a measurement. Simply put, the comparison was no longer apples to apples: the 3,000 drives we stacked up in 2010 only held one terabyte of data. If you were to take those same 3,000 drives and use the average drive size we had in 2013, about 4 terabytes of data per drive, the size of the stack would stay the same, as hard drives had not physically grown, but the <em>density<\/em> of the storage inside the drives had grown by 400%.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, the years went by, we launched an award-winning cloud storage service (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/cloud-storage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Backblaze B2<\/a>), and the incoming <a href=\"\/blog\/petabytes-on-a-budget-10-years-and-counting\/\">petabytes<\/a> kept on accelerating\u2014<a href=\"\/blog\/150-petabytes-of-cloud-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">150 petabytes in early 2015<\/a>, <a href=\"\/blog\/200-petabytes-of-customer-data-and-counting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">200 before we reached 2016<\/a>. Around there, we decided we needed to wait until the next big moment, and in February 2018, we hit <a href=\"\/blog\/500-petabytes-and-counting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">500 petabytes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It took us <em>two years<\/em> to store 10 petabytes of data.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next 7 years, by 2018, we stored another 500 petabytes.<\/p>\n<p>And today, we reset the clock, because in the last two years, we\u2019ve added another <em>500 petabytes<\/em>. Which means we\u2019re turning the clock back to 1&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 exabyte.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, across 125,000 hard drives, Backblaze is managing an exabyte of customer data.<\/p>\n<p>And what does that mean?
