Details are sketchy, but the company claims the cause was either an OS failure or a disgruntled employee that deleted the data.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the cause, since JournalSpace had no backups, in addition to the death of the company, all of the bloggers who hosted their sites with the company lost their data. Many are trying to <a href=\"http:\/\/andrewtheart.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/how-to-recover-mostall-of-your.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reassemble<\/a> their years of blogging from a combination of Google cache results and other pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about this story at <a href=\"http:\/\/hardware.slashdot.org\/article.pl?sid=09\/01\/02\/1546214\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Slashdot<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2009\/01\/03\/journalspace-drama-all-data-lost-without-backup-company-deadpooled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TechCrunch<\/a> or read the company&#8217;s post &#8220;This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper&#8221; where they are also listing the domain for sale.<\/p>\n<p>A few key takeaways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mirroring:<\/strong> JournalSpace had been mirroring their data, meaning two drives would have the exact same data. While often mistaken for backup because this protects from a single <a href=\"\/blog\/managing-for-hard-drive-failures-data-corruption\/\">hard drive failure<\/a>, this is open to all other <a href=\"\/blog\/causes-of-data-loss-and-some-statistics\/\">causes of data loss<\/a> such a virus, fire, user error, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data Recovery:<\/strong> Most people realize they should do backups, but they put it off, and in the back of their head think &#8220;Worst case, I&#8217;ll take it to one of those drive recovery places.&#8221; Alas, as JournalSpace discovered, even the professionals at DriveSavers can only recover data in certain lucky cases.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cost:<\/strong> If you think doing backups is too expensive, try not doing backups.
