As Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage<\/a> gets closer to coming online, we’re adding more people to our Engineering team! The latest addition is Doug! Doug joins us from Colorado, where he lives with his family and enjoys the mountain air. Doug is a pretty interesting guy, with a bit of a background in game development. Lets learn a bit more about Doug, shall we?<\/p>\n

What is your Backblaze title?<\/strong>
\nSenior Software Engineer.<\/p>\n

Where are you originally from?<\/strong>
\nThe Northwest, up to age seven when a \u201cgrand adventure\u201d moved my family to California (Palo Alto, actually\u2014a hop, skip & a jump from Backblaze!). I lived in and around the Bay Area for many years, until \u201cgrand adventure\u201d struck again. This time it whisked my grown-up family to the Western slope of the Colorado rockies, from where I\u2019ll be working remotely.<\/p>\n

What attracted you to Backblaze?<\/strong>
\nThe enthusiasm that employees (and mutual friends!) hold for the company.<\/p>\n

What do you expect to learn while being at Backblaze?<\/strong>
\nBuilding solid, low cost, easy to use cloud services on a massive scale.<\/p>\n

Where else have you worked?<\/strong>
\nI got off to a fun start at Imagic, where I wrote the player vs. environment game \u201cWhite Water!\u201d and Berkeley Softworks, publisher of Commodore GEOS (Yup, that\u2019s me in the \u201cabout\u201d box.). Berkeley Softworks became Geoworks, where I developed operating systems underlying some of the first PDAs & smartphones, patented the \u201cFlexible UI\u201d and ran the Berkeley Design Center. Then there was Blue Mug (wireless consulting with a cool logo), AirSet (where I owned group calendaring), and Groopt (owning the front-end of a forms & payments product for member-based organizations). I\u2019ve had the great fortune of working with awesome people at each & every one of these.<\/p>\n

Where did you go to school?<\/strong>
\nSaratoga High, U.C. Santa Cruz & U.C Berkeley, finishing with a bachelor\u2019s degree in electrical engineering and computer science.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your dream job?<\/strong>
\nThe same as at age seven: \u201cInventor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Favorite place you\u2019ve traveled?<\/strong>
\nHmm.. Tough choice. Eastern Europe (Prague, Romanian countryside), Vienna, the Canadian Rockies, and Kauai come to mind.<\/p>\n

Favorite hobby?<\/strong>
\nHiking (Blazing!) new trails.<\/p>\n

Of what achievement are you most proud?<\/strong>
\nTwo tours performing on stage behind the Iron Curtain as a Friendship Ambassador for the United States.<\/p>\n

“Star Trek” or “Star Wars”?<\/strong>
\nWhat, no LOTR fans here? I\u2019d be hard pressed to have to choose only one, growing up with “Star Trek,” coming in to full geekdom with everything Tolkien, “Star Wars,” NAOS (the National Administration of Science, a well fleshed out creation of a friend), electronics, and recreational math (Yes, I took tests for fun!) in high school.<\/p>\n

Coke or Pepsi?<\/strong>
\nCoke, but only with a turkey sandwich and BBQ potato chips. On long road trips, it\u2019d be Arizona Ice Tea. Plane flights: Canada Dry Ginger Ale. Sugar binge: caramel macchiato or root beer by any microbrewery. Otherwise coffee, black.<\/p>\n

Favorite food?<\/strong>
\nA good reuben sandwich & pint of beer.<\/p>\n

Why do you like certain things?<\/strong>
\nI\u2019m a visual thinker, and am attracted to good design.<\/p>\n

Anything else you\u2019d like you\u2019d like to tell us?<\/strong>
\nMy arrival at Backblaze doubles the number of employees with storied pasts involving appalachian mountain clogging.<\/p>\n
