Elliott comes to us from Facebook as a referral by Chuck<\/a>, who was referred to us by… Elliott! Life is cyclical after all! Elliott’s already hit the ground running and is already all up in our systems. Like Chuck he likes car racing, and he just happens to be our first Mountain Dew drinker in the office! Let’s learn a bit more about Elliott, shall we?<\/p>\n

What is your Backblaze title?<\/strong>
\nI\u2019m a Senior Sysadmin, which basically means \u201cmake the servers work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where are you originally from? <\/strong>
\nI was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and lived there until moving out to the SF Bay Area in 2009.<\/p>\n

What attracted you to Backblaze?<\/strong>
\nI actually originally ran across the job ad while looking for the blog entry about hard drive reliability<\/a> after mine died. Sure enough, it was one of the infamous Seagate 3TB ones. I\u2019d been thinking about moving to a smaller company for a while, and really liked how open Backblaze is and that they sell a useful service to people outside the Silicon Valley bubble.<\/p>\n

What do you expect to learn while being at Backblaze?<\/strong>
\nStorage. Lots of Storage. RAID, Reed-Solomon<\/a>, and controller and drive failure<\/a> modes.<\/p>\n

Where else have you worked?<\/strong>
\nI worked for EDS (then HP when they got bought) from about 2006-2009, then Facebook from 2009 to 2015.<\/p>\n

Where did you go to school?<\/strong>
\nI went to the University of Tulsa off and on for a while, but ended up leaving before graduating. Tuition\u2019s a harder expense to justify in an industry where all the job entries say \u201c…or equivalent experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your dream job?<\/strong>
\nHmm, that\u2019s a tough one. I like helping and making things work better, especially if they\u2019re failing in complicated and hard-to-track-down ways. Really, pretty much the jobs I\u2019ve had since moving to the area have been dream jobs. Smart co-workers and interesting problems.<\/p>\n

Favorite place you\u2019ve traveled?<\/strong>
\nEither St. John in the USVI, which is just beautiful both on land and in the ocean, or Yellowstone for the strangeness.<\/p>\n

Favorite hobby?<\/strong>
\nRacing terrible cars in the 24 Hours of Lemons series.<\/p>\n

Of what achievement are you most proud?<\/strong>
\nDodging this question in a clever way.<\/p>\n

“Star Trek” or “Star Wars”? <\/strong>
\nYes, although I sometimes feel like I\u2019m a terrible geek for having only seen a little of TNG and basically none of the rest.<\/p>\n

Coke or Pepsi?<\/strong>
\nMountain Dew.<\/p>\n

Favorite food?<\/strong>
\nHmm\u2026 Tough to pick just one, but I\u2019m a sucker for anything with pesto or garlic.<\/p>\n

Why do you like certain things?<\/strong>
\nI like what I like, no reason needed.<\/p>\n

Anything else you\u2019d like you\u2019d like to tell us?<\/strong>
\nWhat, answering all the other questions wasn\u2019t enough?<\/p>\n
