{"id":4513,"date":"2013-11-30T17:56:52","date_gmt":"2013-12-01T01:56:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/blog\/?p=4513"},"modified":"2025-12-12T14:03:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T22:03:27","slug":"comcast-secure-backup-share-shut-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/blog\/comcast-secure-backup-share-shut-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Comcast Secure Backup &#038; Share Shut Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/blog-comcast-shutdown-van.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-19yjmznj\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4514\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/blog-comcast-shutdown-van.jpg\" alt=\"blog-comcast-shutdown-van\" width=\"560\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/blog-comcast-shutdown-van.jpg 560w, https:\/\/backblazeprod.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/blog-comcast-shutdown-van-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"bzdropcap\">Comcast, the <a title=\"largest high-speed internet provider\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">largest high speed internet provider<\/a> in the US with over 20 million subscribers, launched an online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/cloud-storage\/solutions\/backup-and-archive\">backup service<\/a> called Secure Backup &amp; Share in 2010 through a partnership with Mozy.<\/p>\n<p>This Thanksgiving weekend, December 1, 2013, <em>Comcast Secure Backup &amp; Share is shutting down and deleting all customer data<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Comcast Secure Backup &amp; Share offered:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2GB for free<\/li>\n<li>50GB plan for $5\/month<\/li>\n<li>200GB for $10\/month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The first question is, &#8220;Why are they shutting the service down?&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nIt&#8217;s unclear and they don&#8217;t say. However, when Comcast announced this partnership in 2010, Mozy had a strong focus on consumers. Since its acquisition by EMC, Mozy has been moving away from consumers to focus on enterprise sales.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this contract has expired and Mozy decided to continue defocusing on consumers by not renewing the contract?<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, or additionally, in February 2011 <a href=\"\/blog\/farewell-to-mozy-backup\/\">Mozy<\/a> cancelled their unlimited service, saying the cost of storage was growing too quickly and that it was inevitable that all online backup companies would have to discontinue their unlimited offerings. We disagreed, explaining why our cost of storage would enable us to continue, and <a title=\"unlimited online backup\" href=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/blog\/backblaze-is-committed-to-unlimited-backup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">re-committed Backblaze to unlimited online backup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Canceling their unlimited plan and switching to a 50GB plan for $6\/month upset many of their users.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, perhaps Comcast found that customers strongly preferred the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/company\/news.html\">unlimited storage<\/a> model so as not to have to worry about usage caps or surprise charges?<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps the contract from Mozy became increasingly expensive as Mozy&#8217;s underlying cost of storage was too high?<\/p>\n<p><strong>And the second question of course is, &#8220;What should all those customers do to backup the data on their computers?&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nObviously, we think the answer is customers should sign up with <a title=\"online backup\" href=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Backblaze<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Signing up with Backblaze enables customers to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>1. Still keep backing up their data for $5\/month.<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>2. Get completely unlimited storage instead of 50GB.<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>3.
