We thought a few people might find it interesting. Perhaps some might even want to try to build one. We never expected what would happen next.<\/p>\n<p>Om Malik wrote about it at <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2009\/09\/01\/open-source-hardware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GigaOm<\/a>, as did Robin Harris at <a href=\"https:\/\/storagemojo.com\/2009\/09\/01\/cloud-storage-for-100-a-terabyte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">StorageMojo<\/a>, and Cory Doctorow on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2009\/09\/01\/open-design-for-a-67.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boing Boing<\/a>. Soon after, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2009\/09\/02\/how-much-for-67-terabytes-try-7867\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TechCrunch<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2009\/09\/01\/backblaze-sets-its-cheap-storage-designs-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VentureBeat<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/build-a-raid-6-array-for-100tb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ZDNet<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2009\/09\/01\/backblaze-online-backu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mashable<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2009\/09\/01\/need-a-few-petabytes-of-mac-storage-build-your-own-backblaze-st\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Engadget<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macworld.com\/article\/142653\/2009\/09\/backblazestoragepod.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MacWorld<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/vator.tv\/news\/show\/2009-09-01-backblaze-gives-away-cloud-storage-designs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vator.tv<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eweek.com\/storage\/newcomer-backblaze-offers-ultra-cheap-do-it-yourself-cloud-storage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eWeek<\/a>, and dozens of others picked it up. After digging in, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallnetbuilder.com\/content\/view\/30922\/79\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SmallNetBuilder<\/a> did a thorough breakdown for its DIY audience.<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/technology\/blog\/2009\/sep\/02\/backblaze-petabytes-cloud-computing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Guardian<\/a> and the Inquirer wrote about it, but so did news sites in <a href=\"http:\/\/appfrica.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Africa<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crn.com.au\/News\/154760,want-a-petabyte-for-under-us120000.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Australia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/punto-informatico.it\/2701200\/PI\/News\/open-hardware-ha-una-gran-memoria.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Italy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.3dnews.ru\/news\/kak_sozdat_petabaitnii_klaster_za_117_tis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.idg.se\/~r\/SenasteArtiklar-Techworld\/~3\/Si_yoGw5ioQ\/sa-byggs-billig-lagring-i-stor-skala\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sweden<\/a>, Belgium, Bulgaria, Poland, France, Germany, and China.<\/p>\n<p>Day two we expected fewer readers, but instead three times more showed up as the post rose to the top of <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090908215928\/http:\/\/digg.com:80\/hardware\/Petabytes_on_a_budget_How_to_build_cheap_cloud_storage?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digg<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/slashdot.org\/index2.pl?fhfilter=backblaze\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Slashdot<\/a>, Reddit, and StumbleUpon. CNET analysts pontificated about it on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnet.com\/8301-19709_1-10335130-10.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buzz Out Loud<\/a>. James Hamilton, the Vice President and Distinguished Engineer at Amazon Web Services wrote on his blog that we were <a href=\"http:\/\/perspectives.mvdirona.com\/2009\/09\/03\/SuccessfullyChallengingTheServerTax.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">challenging the server tax<\/a>. Joerg Moellenkamp, Principal Field Technologist and Senior Systems Engineer at Sun wrote a long description comparing the Sun x4540 Thumper and the Backblaze Storage Pod. After being shocked when 13,000 people read his comparison, he also wrote a follow up.<\/p>\n<p>Enormous discussions were generated on forums including <a href=\"http:\/\/news.ycombinator.com\/item?id=797995\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Y Combinator Hacker News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overclock.net\/forum\/225-hardware-news\/570195-backblaze-want-build-your-own-67-terabyte-storage-solution-4.html#post7114146\">Overclock<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardforum.com\/showthread.php?t=1448509\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">[H]ard|Forum<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120428102159\/http:\/\/studiosysadmins.com:80\/board\/search\/posts\/?search_term=backblaze\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">StudioSysAdmins<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shacknews.com\/laryn.x?id=20800167#itemanchor_20800167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ShackNews<\/a>, Google Groups&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.ca\/group\/cloud-computing\/browse_thread\/thread\/9dcdec496423cfa1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cloud Computing<\/a> list, and many others. This <a href=\"http:\/\/habrahabr.ru\/blogs\/hardware\/68832\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russian review at Habrahabr<\/a> alone generated 20 pages of comments.<\/p>\n<p>About half a million people read the blog post in these first couple weeks. Including, it seems, God, who then started following <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/backblaze\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Backblaze on Twitter<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/twitter_god_following.jpg\" alt=\"Twitter_God_following\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our mailboxes started to overflow with feedback, design ideas, and questions. Some people wanted to setup <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090905075716\/http:\/\/harkopen.com:80\/projects\/backblaze-pod\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open source projects<\/a> around the Storage Pods. A Craiglist job posting in Chicago wanted to hire people who could build Backblaze Storage Pods:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image198\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/storage_pod_job_chicago.jpg\" alt=\"Storage_Pod_Job\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of people emailed us asking to buy the Pods. (We said, &#8220;but the design is free?&#8221; And they replied, &#8220;yes, but we want you to sell us complete Pods.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Protocase, the company we pointed people to if they wanted to buy one-off Backblaze <a href=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/cloud-storage\/resources\/storage-pod\">Storage Pod<\/a> cases received over 100 inquiries to buy cases in the first week; they revised their home page and created a price list for these Backblaze cases:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image195\" src=\"https:\/\/www.backblaze.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/protocase_site.jpg\" alt=\"Protocase_site\" \/><\/p>\n<p>People emailed us suggesting a whole variety of uses for the Backblaze Storage Pods. Universities wanted to use them for storing research data. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.red.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RED<\/a> digital cinematographer proposed a custom solution focused on storing videos generated by these HD cameras. People proposed using these for surveillance camera data and as a replacement for tape archive systems.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most unique projects someone wanted to use Backblaze Storage Pods for is to store data created by a fleet of modified flatbed scanners that are being used to study aging by doing time-lapse photography of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wormatlas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">worms<\/a> at a Harvard Systems Biology lab.<\/p>\n<p>Are you building a Pod?
